Working in Hot Conditions
We work in Extreme conditions from time to time and need to recognize and understand the signs of heat exhaustion and stroke. Exposure to extreme heat can result in illness and injury. Working in a hot environment can cause heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, or heat rash. In addition, heat increases the risk of injury because of sweaty palms, fogged-up safety glasses, and dizziness. Burns also can occur when a worker comes in contact with a hot surface.
Lets review some signs of heat illness below:
- Confusion and slurred speech
- High body temperature
- Headache and Nausea
- Heavy sweating
- Thirst and weakness
- Seizures, hot, dry skin
- Unconsciousness
*If you experience any of these or notice a co-working experiencing one or more off these symptoms. Move the person to a cooler place (if available), wetting with water or ice and fan. Also encourage them to drink water. Immediately report the incident to the Forman. If the illness becomes life threatening Dial: 911.
** Be proactive to prevent an accident or injury due to a heat illness. Always be aware of your surroundings and listen to your body when working in hot conditions.
