- Check the bench: Before using a drywall bench, make sure it’s in good condition and that it can support the weight you’ll be putting on it. Ensure the legs of the bench are completely extended and locked in place. Do not mount a bench without ensuring the bench is sold and stable.
- Follow the weight limit: Don’t exceed the bench’s weight limit, which can cause it to collapse.
- Use the bench properly: Only use the bench for its intended purpose, and don’t let more than one person use it at a time.
- Wear non-skid shoes: Wear shoes with non-skid soles when using the bench.
- Distribute your weight: Distribute your weight evenly while working on the bench.
- Don’t overreach: If you need to reach further, move the bench closer to you instead. If you need to be at a higher level to do you work, investigate other options that allow you to work safely at that height. Remember the 6′ fall protection requirement.
- Inspect your wok area: Always inspect your work area for cleanliness and hazards.
- Bench work area: Avoid walking to the end of the bench. Center your weight on the middle of the bench platform and avoid standing on the edges of the bench.
- Ensure all benches meet customer and Berg requirements for your job-site: Never use benches or ladders unless they are allowed for your specific site. Each project may have different rules around working from heights and what tools you may use to work from heights. Always check with your project leader or safety team member before using a bench, ladder or other height assist tool.
